Tmall Cost & Registration Guide for Beauty Brands

Alibaba’s Tmall is still the number one destination for beauty brands entering China’s online market. But the entry costs have shifted, the registration process has new requirements, and the competitive bar is higher. Here is what you need to know before you apply.

Why Your Brand Needs Tmall

Tmall holds around 46% of China’s B2C e-commerce market as of 2025 (iResearch). That share has dipped slightly as Douyin Shop and XHS Shop grow, but Tmall remains the benchmark platform. If your brand is not on Tmall, distributors, KOLs, and Chinese consumers treat you as unserious.

International brands still use Tmall as their Chinese headquarters. It signals trust, product authenticity, and brand permanence. JD.com remains strong for electronics and premium goods. Douyin Shop is growing fast for impulse buys. But for a beauty brand building long-term equity, Tmall is where you start.

What Are the Fees to Enter Tmall?

Tmall is not cheap. That is intentional. The platform uses cost as a filter. Here is a current breakdown.

Tmall.com Store Fees

  • Flagship Store deposit: 150,000 RMB to 200,000 RMB
  • Annual technical service fee: 30,000 to 60,000 RMB per year
  • Sales commission: 2% to 5.5% depending on category (skincare sits around 4%)
  • Alipay transaction fee: 1% of total sales

These numbers are higher than they were in 2021. Platform competition has pushed Alibaba to invest more in merchant services, and that cost gets passed on.

Tmall Global Fees (Cross-Border)

Tmall Global is built for foreign brands without a Chinese entity. You sell from your home country, ship to Chinese bonded warehouses, and Tmall handles customs clearance on the consumer side.

  • Deposit: USD 10,000 to USD 25,000 depending on store format
  • Annual service fee: USD 5,000 to USD 10,000 depending on product category
  • Commission: around 5% of gross sales

Fee waivers apply if you hit Tmall sales targets. Most new brands do not hit them in year one, so budget the full amount.

Tmall Registration Requirements: What You Actually Need

The registration process has four main steps. Each one takes time, so do not wait until you are ready to launch before starting.

  1. Submit product information and brand documents. Verification takes up to 10 working days.
  2. Register an Alipay account. Applying offline takes 7 to 10 days.
  3. Sign the merchant agreement and pay the deposit and annual fee. Budget another 7 to 10 days.
  4. Build the store: register your account, complete the platform test, upload products, and go live.

For Tmall.com (domestic), you need a Chinese business entity, a Chinese bank account, and product registration with local authorities. For Tmall Global (cross-border), you do not need a Chinese entity, but you still need a valid trademark, a business license from your home country, and products that comply with Chinese import regulations.

Which Tmall Store Format Fits Your Brand?

Flagship Store

You own the brand or hold exclusive rights to it. This is the most prestigious format. It signals direct brand presence. Chinese consumers trust flagship stores more than authorized or specialty stores. Most international beauty brands aim for this format.

Authorized Store

A distributor or retailer runs the store with official brand authorization. The authorization documents must not carry regional restrictions, and the validity period must extend well beyond your launch date. This format works for brands that want to test the market through a local partner before committing to a flagship.

Specialty Store

A merchant sells products from two or more brands within the same category. This is the most common format for multi-brand distributors. If you are not careful, your brand sits next to competitors. One merchant can only apply for one specialty store per category.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Tmall and Tmall Global? Tmall Global does not require a Chinese business entity or bank account. You sell cross-border from your home country. Tmall.com requires full local registration but gives you access to a larger domestic consumer base.

Do I have to choose Tmall to sell in China? No. Douyin Shop and JD.com are legitimate alternatives. But for beauty brands building a long-term market position, Tmall remains the highest-trust platform.

What is a Tmall Partner and why use one? Tmall Partners (TPs) are certified agencies that manage stores on behalf of brands. They handle operations, marketing, logistics, and customer service.

How long does Tmall registration take? Budget 6 to 10 weeks from application to store launch. Start the process before you think you need to.
