JD.com is China’s second-largest B2C e-commerce marketplace, operating over 1,000 warehouses nationwide. JD Worldwide is its cross-border extension, letting foreign sellers reach Chinese consumers without a physical presence in China. For beauty brands, JD Worldwide is one entry point. But in 2026, it is one piece of a larger puzzle that includes Tmall, Douyin Shop, and AI-driven discovery.

If you sell cosmetics or skincare abroad and want to enter China, this guide covers what you need to know about JD Worldwide, plus where it fits inside China’s current beauty market.

Sales Models on JD.com

JD.com offers three primary sales approaches.

Direct Sales allows the platform to source products directly from suppliers and brands, then sell to consumers through its website and mobile app. This model is reserved for reputable brands already operating inside China.

JD Marketplace lets established third-party sellers run storefronts and sell directly to customers. You get access to fulfillment infrastructure, marketing services, and logistics support.

JD Worldwide is the cross-border version. Foreign brands set up storefronts and ship from abroad, no Chinese business entity required. Products clear customs under the CBEC (cross-border e-commerce) regime.

Key Benefits for Foreign Beauty Brands

JD Worldwide connects you to a premium Chinese audience. JD customers skew male and high-income, which makes it strong for men’s grooming, premium skincare, and health supplements. For mass-market beauty, Tmall and Douyin Shop attract higher volume.

The platform handles global shipping through partnerships with DHL, YAMATO, and Australia Post. Payment arrives in USD. You do not need a domestic bank account or local entity to start.

Marketing tools include banner ads, pay-per-click sponsored links, SEO optimization, homepage promotions, coupon systems, and recommendation features. JD also runs major shopping festivals, including 618 in June and 11.11 in November, where cross-border beauty brands often see their highest monthly sales.

Entry Requirements

JD Worldwide requires:

  • Registered trademark or valid licensing agreement
  • USD bank account
  • Business registration documents and shareholder ID
  • Mandarin product descriptions
  • Chinese-language customer support
  • Domestic return center in China
  • Dispatch within 72 hours of order confirmation

The Mandarin product descriptions are not optional. Chinese consumers read them. They cross-check on XHS. They ask AI assistants about your ingredients. A poorly translated product page costs you sales before the consumer even clicks “buy.”

Costs and Process

The refundable deposit is $1,500. Annual shop fee is $1,000. Commission rates range from 2% to 8% depending on category and order value. Cosmetics and skincare typically sit at 5 to 7%.

The process: contact the relevant Business Development Manager, submit documentation, follow registration steps, get approval, pay fees, launch your store. Expect 4 to 8 weeks from application to live store.

Leading categories in 2026 include electronics and home appliances, automotive parts, food and beverages, fashion and apparel, digital products, and cosmetics and personal care. Skincare outpaces color cosmetics on JD, where the audience prioritizes efficacy over trends. Health supplements and dermocosmetics (pharmacy-style brands) are the fastest-growing beauty subcategory on the platform.

Promotion Strategy

Successful JD Worldwide merchants invest in visual quality first. Chinese consumers expect high-resolution product photography, video demonstrations, and lifestyle imagery inside your JD storefront. A plain white-background listing page signals a brand that does not take China seriously.

Use longtail keyword titles in Chinese. “Imported ceramide repair cream for sensitive skin” outperforms “moisturizing cream” every time. Build a Chinese-language brand presence on XHS before you launch your JD store. Consumers who discover you on XHS and then find your JD listing convert at higher rates than cold traffic.

Use WeChat for repeat purchase and loyalty. JD drives first acquisition. WeChat keeps the customer. Connect the two with a branded mini-program or official account that gives JD buyers a reason to follow you after the first order.

Participate in 618 and 11.11. JD’s two major shopping festivals account for a disproportionate share of annual beauty GMV on the platform. Brands that run category promotions during these periods see 3 to 5x their daily average order volume, according to QuestMobile.
