Xiaohongshu Content Strategy for Cosmetics Brands: The Playbook

Xiaohongshu has 400 million registered users in 2026, and over 70% of them check the platform before buying any beauty product. If your cosmetics brand is not on XHS with a real content strategy, you are invisible to the Chinese consumer. Not underperforming. Invisible. The platform has matured fast: algorithm updates in late 2025 killed low-effort UGC reposts, and brands that relied on bulk seeding without strategy are watching their reach collapse. This playbook covers what actually works in 2026.

How Xiaohongshu Works for Beauty Brands

XHS is not Instagram. It is a search engine with a social layer. Users open the app to solve a problem: “which SPF for oily skin in summer,” “Korean skincare routine for sensitive skin,” “best toner under 200 RMB.” Your content needs to answer those queries, not just look pretty.

The algorithm in 2026 ranks notes (posts) based on four signals: save rate, comment rate, share rate, and search relevance. Likes matter less than they did in 2023. A note with 200 saves beats a note with 2,000 likes every time. This changes how you write captions, structure images, and choose topics.

There are three content formats that matter right now:

  • Image notes (图文): Still the highest volume format. 6-9 image carousels with text overlays perform best for ingredient education and routine tutorials.
  • Short video: Under 60 seconds. Before/after texture demos, application techniques, unboxing. XHS video is not Douyin. Slower pace, more informational.
  • Shop notes: Linked directly to XHS e-commerce (小红书电商). Since the platform pushed its own checkout hard in 2025, shoppable notes get algorithmic preference in certain beauty subcategories.

Your brand needs all three. Not one. All three, at different posting frequencies.

The Content Mix That Drives Results

Brands that are winning on XHS in 2026 follow a 60/30/10 content split:

  • 60% educational/problem-solving content: Ingredient breakdowns, skin type matching, climate-specific routines (humidity in Shanghai vs. dry Beijing winters), comparison notes between your product and category norms.
  • 30% social proof and KOL/KOC content: Seeded reviews from verified users, KOC (key opinion consumers) with 5,000 to 50,000 followers. Real skin, real results, real people. Not polished ad shoots.
  • 10% brand story and product launches: Behind-the-scenes, R&D content, founder stories. This builds brand equity slowly. Do not make it more than 10% or you will look self-promotional.

Florasis (花西子) used this structure to dominate the guochao beauty conversation on XHS. Their educational content on traditional Chinese botanical ingredients drove saves and shares, not just passive scrolling. L’Oreal China runs a parallel KOC seeding operation of 200+ micro-creators monthly for their local skincare lines, keeping the review pipeline fresh without relying on any single account.

KOL vs. KOC: Where to Put Your Budget

This debate is settled. KOC wins for conversion. KOL wins for reach and credibility signals. You need both, but the budget split has shifted.

In 2024, brands chased mega-KOLs (1M+ followers). The cost per post hit 80,000 to 300,000 RMB for top beauty accounts. The ROI was weak. Followers were broad, not targeted. Engagement rates on mega accounts dropped to 1-2%.

In 2026, smart brands allocate 60-70% of influencer spend to KOCs (5,000 to 100,000 followers). Engagement rates on these accounts run 5-12%. Their audiences trust them precisely because they are small. A KOC saying “this moisturizer fixed my dry patches in a Beijing winter” is worth more than a million-follower account doing a paid post that everyone knows is paid.

The practical approach: seed 50 to 150 KOCs per quarter with product, give them a brief (key claim, usage context, target concern), and let them write their own note. Do not script it. Scripted KOC content gets flagged by the algorithm and spotted by users immediately.

Laneige ran a KOC campaign for their Lip Sleeping Mask on XHS in early 2026 that seeded 80 accounts in the 10,000 to 80,000 follower range. The campaign generated 1.2 million organic impressions over six weeks at a fraction of what a single mega-KOL post would have cost. The saves-to-views ratio was 8.3%, well above the platform average.

Search Optimization on XHS: The Part Most Brands Skip

XHS is the number one search engine for beauty product research in China. More consumers search for skincare advice on XHS than on Baidu. That means your notes need to be optimized for search, not just the feed.

Here is how to do it:

  • Title optimization: Put the core keyword in the first 20 characters of your note title. “油皮夏天防晒推荐” (SPF recommendations for oily skin in summer) outperforms “Stay Protected This Summer” every time. Use the platform’s native search bar to see autocomplete suggestions before you write your title.
  • Hashtag strategy: Use 3 to 5 hashtags. One broad category tag (e.g., #护肤), one specific concern tag (e.g., #油皮控油), one product/ingredient tag. Do not keyword-stuff. The algorithm penalizes it.
  • Note body copy: Write in natural Chinese consumer language. Use the words your target customers use, not the words your product team uses. “修复受损皮肤屏障” (repair damaged skin barrier) is a search term. “Advanced barrier renewal technology” is not.
  • Post timing: 8-10pm weekdays and 10am-12pm weekends. The XHS feed is active. Notes posted outside peak hours lose 30-40% of initial distribution.

Proya (珀莱雅) built its XHS search presence around skin barrier content in 2025. Every product note included barrier-related keywords. Their notes consistently ranked in the top 5 organic results for “屏障修复” searches, driving traffic to their XHS store without paid distribution.
