Australian Cosmetics Brands in China: Clean Beauty, XHS, and a Winning Strategy

By Inna Kowalsky

2 min read

Australian cosmetics brands have quietly built one of the most compelling origin stories for the Chinese beauty market. Clean ingredients, natural formulas, Southern Hemisphere botanicals, and a lifestyle positioning that resonates with health-conscious Chinese consumers, Australia has become a trusted beauty origin in China, alongside France, Japan, and South Korea. In 2026, Australian beauty brands are among the fastest-growing foreign cosmetics categories on Tmall Global and Xiaohongshu.

The daigou market for Australian beauty products (personal shoppers buying Aesop, Jurlique, and Swisse from Sydney or Melbourne) was already significant in 2016. By 2026, these brands have formalized their China presence via CBEC and flagship stores. The organic demand proved the market; smart brands converted it into structured distribution.

Top Australian Cosmetics Brands in China

Aesop, Acquired by L’Oréal Group in 2023, Aesop has accelerated its China expansion. Its minimalist aesthetic, botanical ingredients, and design-forward retail stores fit the premium Chinese consumer perfectly. Aesop stores in Shanghai and Beijing are XHS content magnets, the brand’s distinctive interior design generates organic social media coverage that money cannot buy.

Jurlique, The South Australian botanical skincare brand has strong brand awareness in China built through years of daigou. Jurlique’s rose farm origin story plays perfectly on XHS. Their Tmall Global store and selective offline presence in premium department stores keeps the brand aspirational while accessible.

Swisse, Technically a wellness/supplement brand, Swisse’s beauty-from-within positioning (collagen supplements, skin health capsules) has grown rapidly in China where “inner beauty” supplements are booming. Swisse is a case study in how Australian health brands can expand into beauty adjacencies in China.

  • “Clean Australian” is a powerful positioning: Chinese consumers associate Australia with clean air, pure water, and natural ingredients, a direct contrast to urban pollution anxiety. Brands that lead with their Australian origin and natural formula story tap into this powerful consumer desire.
  • Botanical and native ingredient stories perform on XHS: Australian native ingredients, Kakadu plum (world’s highest natural Vitamin C source), tea tree oil, macadamia, Tasmanian pepperberry, are highly searchable on XHS. Brands with unique Australian botanicals have built-in content differentiation.
  • CBEC remains the primary channel: Most Australian cosmetics brands sell via Tmall Global or JD Worldwide, shipping from Australian bonded warehouses. Full NMPA registration is less common, the CBEC route is more efficient for the volumes involved.
  • Wellness-beauty convergence is accelerating: Australian brands at the intersection of nutrition and beauty (ingestible collagen, probiotic skincare, adaptogen formulas) are capturing the fast-growing “beauty from within” segment in China.
  • Sustainability credentials resonate: Australian brands with strong environmental stories (certified organic, reef-safe sunscreens, zero-waste packaging) differentiate strongly on XHS among eco-conscious Chinese Gen Z consumers.
